On 27 February 1896 Mary Ellen Rowland was born, the birth being registered in Q2 1896. She was baptised on 15 April 1896 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity. Mother was Margaret Rowland of 26 Cathcart Street, no father listed, marked “Illegit” on the baptism register.

Christopher George effectively adopted her when he married Margaret Elizabeth Rowland on 12 July 1897. Perhaps he was the biological father?

Mary Ellen married Ben Gale Bastock on 6 August 1917 at St Leonard’s Church, Bootle. They had a daughter Violet in 1919, and a son Alfred James in 1923.

According to the available electoral registers, they lived in Liverpool in 1931, Greenwich from 1937 to 1951, and Bexley from 1957 to 1965.
