Christopher John Waller (1890-1960)

At some point between 1883 and 1886, Edward Ansell and Jane moved to West Ham.

In Q2 1890 the birth of Christopher John Waller was registered in West Ham, Essex. He was born on 7 May 1890 and baptised on 16 May 1890 at St. Luke’s, Victoria Docks.

In the 1901 Census they are living in Canning Town West Ham. Edward A. Waller is aged 45 and a Dock Labourer, Jane is 45, Amelia is 17, George J. is 14, Christopher J. is 10, Edward W. is 8 and Eliza is 6.

In the 1911 Census they are still in Canning Town. Edward “Ancell” Waller is 55 and a Stevedore, Jane is 55 (birthplace “Beventon Chisher” rather than Bebington Cheshire), Christopher John, 20, is a Soldier in the Dragoon Guards, Edward William, 18, occupation India Rubber Works, and Eliza Annie is 16.

Christopher John’s Medal Card shows he was a Private, and served with the King’s 1st Dragoon Guards, part of the 8th (Lucknow) Cavalry Brigade in the 1st Indian Cavalry Division. They were based in Lucknow India and in November 1914 landed at Marseilles, from where they went to the Western Front. The regiment saw action at the Battle of Festubert in May 1915, the Second Battle of Ypres also in May 1915 and the Battle of Morval in September 1916, and returned to India in October 1917. He received the 1914 Star, British and Victory medals, together with the Indian General Service Medal with AFGN NWFF (Afghanistan North West Frontier Force) clasp.

On either 22 or 28 August 1920 (two records exist), Christopher John Waller married Elsie Maude Bacon, daughter of George Bacon.

There are three Wallers born with mother’s maiden name Bacon.

In the 1939 register taken on 29 September, Christopher John and family are living at 5, Hall Cottages, Southminster, Essex. His date of birth is given as 7 April 1891, but as his birth was registered in 1890 Q2, he was definitely born in 1890. His occupation is Cowman.

His wife Elsie M. Waller’s date of birth is given as 4 July 1900. Son Reginald A.J. Waller, born 24 November 1923 (15), is single and a Farm Carter. Son Peter L. Waller, born 6 May 1925 (14), is single and also a Farm Carter.

Sydney Edward George Waller was called up on 1 September 1939 and served with the 1st / 4th Essex Regiment.

Sydney married Margaret J. Hanshaw in Hendon Middlesex in 1947. They had three children, Christopher W. in 1945, Stephen P. in 1951 and Simon P. in 1955. The family later emigrated to Canada.

The marriage of Peter L. Waller and Sybil L. Matchan in Rochford, Essex was registered in Q1 1946. They had two children, Lynne J . Waller in 1945 and Julie H. Waller in 1953.

The marriage of Reginald A.J. Waller and Edith Belfield in Maldon was registered in Q2 1947.

Reginald and Edith had three children in Maldon, Roger J. Waller born in Q2 1948, Peter E. Waller born Q2 1952 (mother’s name recorded as Belfields) and Jonathan R. Waller born in Q4 1962.

The death of Christopher John Waller aged 69 in Maldon was registered in Q3 1960.
