The birth of Edward Ansell Waller in Birkenhead was registered in Q2 1891 and he was baptised on 9 June 1891 at Birkenhead St. Peter.
In the 1901 Census, Edward A. Waller aged 9 was staying with his uncle Edward Ansell Waller (1856-1938), a Dock Labourer living in West Ham, together with his sister Annie Waller aged 8.
In the 1911 Census Edward’s father James Colby Waller, a Dock Labourer aged 47 and born in Birkenhead, was a boarder at 17 Coolfin Road, Victoria Docks East, Canning Town. Sarah Fuller aged 47 (who he married in 1917) was the head of the household and a widow, and his daughter Annie Waller aged 19 and born in Birkenhead was present.
On 28 January 1917 at 7.15 pm he died of pneumonia while serving on HMS Orvieto in the Norwegian Sea. The ship’s log shows he was a Coal Trimmer, service number 850235, in the Mercantile Marine Reserve. The CWGC entry confirms he was the son of James C. Waller of 4, Argyle Rd., Custom House, London, and a native of Birkenhead. This suggests he was not married. He would have been 25 years old.
He was buried at sea at 10.35 am on the 29th January 1917, and is commemorated at the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
