In Q3 1900, William John Stubbs married Maggie McIwraith in Birkenhead.
In the 1901 Census William John Stubbs, 22, a Journeyman Butcher Slaughterman, was living in Tranmere with his wife Maggie Stubbs, aged 22 and born in Scotland..
They had four daughters.

William John Stubbs, occupation Motor Mechanic, volunteered on 7 August 1915 at Liverpool Old Haymarket, and joined 305 Mechanical Transport Company A.S.C. (Army Service Corps) on 11 August at Grove Park in south-east London (the former Greenwich Union workhouse). He first entered France on 28 January 1916 at Rouen.
On 31 October 1917 he was in the Lorry Park of 35 Ammunition Sub Park (305 Company A.S.C.) at Elverdinge, north-west of Ypres in Belgium. This was a large ammunition depot. At 9 pm 5 bombs were dropped, killing M2/116933 Private William John Stubbs and wounding four others, as well as killing 12 horses.
Private Stubbs was hit by the first bomb. The war diary records that CQMS (Company Quartermaster Sergeant) MS/2362 A. Graham, at great personal risk, dashed through the flames and pulled Private Stubbs out from under lorry WD 21834, assisted by M2/116299 Private F.J. Downing and 23364 Gunner W.L. Walker (R.F.A.).

He was buried at Solferino Farm Cemetery, Kapellestraat, 8900 Ieper, Belgium, about 2 miles from where he was killed, and is recorded on the CWGC website.
