George James Waller (1877-1955)

Sergeant George Waller

Born on 16 January 1877, he was baptised on 4 March at Birkenhead St. Peter.

In 1891 he was a Railway Messenger aged 14.

On 3 April 1900 he married Edith Emma Woodherd in Leicester. She was born on 25 August 1877 in Elham near Folkestone and baptised on 27 September. His address was 214 Beckwith Street Birkenhead, hers was 11 Edward Street, Anstey, Leicester. Her father was John Woodherd.

In Q4 1900 Edith Vera Waller was born in Birkenhead, and baptised on 14 October in Leicester, where Edith Emma’s family lived.

In the March 1901 census they were living with the Byrne family at 217 Price Street, and George, 24, was a Railway Timekeeper. Edith Emma was 23, and Edith Vera was 6 months old.

On 14 February 1903 Ethel Valentine was born, and she was baptised on 4 March at Birkenhead St. Peter.

In Q3 1905 George Leslie Waller was born. and baptised on 12 September at Holy Trinity.

On 14 November 1907 Bessie Wills Waller was born.

In 1911 the family were living at 14, Park Road, Port Sunlight and George, aged 34, was a Member of the Port Sunlight Fire Watch Brigade. Port Sunlight was built by Lord Lever to house his employees. Edith Emma was 33, Edith Vera 10, Ethel Valentine 8, George Leslie 5 and Bessie Wills 3.

George volunteered for the Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport and served in 89 Company in France, first as a Private and then as a Sergeant. After the war he returned to the Port Sunlight Fire Brigade.

In Q1 1931 George Leslie Waller married Bertha Powell, registered in the Wirral.

On 3 September 1932, Edith Vera Waller married Harry Harvey, son of William Harvey, in Derby. Her father’s occupation was Mechanic.

In 1939 George James was still a Fireman, aged 62, and living a short walk from Park Road at 9 Wood Street, both addresses being right opposite Lever Brothers’ premises. Ethel and Bessie were still at home aged 32 and 36 and working at Lever’s.

In June 1940 Ethel Valentine Waller married Frank W. Davies, registered in the Wirral, and in Q1 1944 she gave birth to Marjorie Davies.

In Q4 1955 George James Waller died, registered in the Wirral, aged 78.

In Q1 1991 the death of Bessie Wills Waller was registered in Birkenhead. Her date of birth was recorded as 14 November 1907, so she was 83.
