Martha Younger (née Waller) (1857-1929)

In Q3 1857 Martha Waller (1857-1929) was born in Birkenhead (according to the baptism record, but the birth index just says Wirral), and was christened on 10 September 1857 at St. Peter’s, Liverpool (there was a St. Peter’s in Birkenhead as well, perhaps an error was made?) Again the parents were George and Amelia on the baptism record.

In Q4 1874 the birth of Amelia Waller (1874-1953) was registered. She was baptised at Birkenhead St. Peter on 20 December 1874. Parents name Martha, Quality, Trade or Profession Single Woman, Surname Waller. Abode given as 139 Wood Street Birkenhead. Martha was 17 at the time, so her parents effectively adopted Amelia.

On 1 June 1881 (according to an Ancestry.co.uk hint, I only have the marriage register entry in Q2) Martha Waller married Robert Younger in Liverpool. Amelia remained with George James and Amelia, her grandparents.

In Q4 1881 James David Younger was born in Birkenhead.

In Q2 1883 the birth of Georgina Younger was registered. She was baptised on 20 May 1883 at Birkenhead St. Peter, parents Robert and Martha Younger.

On 12 October 1884 George Christopher Younger was born. He was baptised on 7 May 1885 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity. Father’s occupation Labourer, abode 51 Wood Street.

On 27 April 1887 Flora Younger was born. She was baptised at Birkenhead Holy Trinity on 13 July 1887. Father’s occupation Labourer, abode 26 Wood Street.

In the 1891 Census the family are living at 21 Wood Street. Robert is a General Labourer aged 33, Martha is 32, James David is 9, Georgina is 8, George (George Christopher) is 6 and Flora is 3.

On 12 September 1894 David Walter Younger was born. He was baptised the next day on 13 September 1894 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity. Father’s occupation Labourer, abode 31 Taylor Street.

On 19 September 1897 Margaret Emma Younger was born. She was baptised at Birkenhead Holy Trinity on 13 October 1897. Father’s occupation Labourer, abode 31 Taylor Street.

In the 1901 Census taken 31 March, they are living at 61 Lord Street Birkenhead. Robert is 45 and a General Labourer. Martha Younger is 44, James David is 19 and an Apprentice Carpenter, Georgina is 18 and a Dressmaker, George is 16 and an Apprentice Carpenter. Flora 13 and David 6 are at school, and Margaret is 3.

On 14 February 1905 James David Younger, 23, married Emily Metcalf, daughter of Townley Metcalf, at St Michael and All Angels, Claughton-cum-Grande, Cheshire.

On 27 July 1905 Florence Younger was born. She was baptised on 5 October 1905 at St Michael and All Angels, Claughton-cum-Grande, Cheshire, parents James David and Emily Younger.

In Q3 1907 Emily May Younger was born to James David and Emily Younger, no baptism record found as yet. She appears in the 1911 Census as May, at 3 years of age.

In Q2 1909 George Christopher Younger married Harriet Hitchmough.

On 5 September 1909 Georgina Younger married Thomas Davies, 25, son of George Davies, at Birkenhead St. Mary.

In Q1 1910 Flora Clara Younger’s birth was registered. She may have been born in 1909 or 1910. She was baptised on 23 January 1910 at St. Catherine, Tranmere, parents George Christopher and Harriet.

In the 1911 Census for Robert and Martha Younger taken 2 April, they are still at 61 Lord Street. Robert is 54 and a Dock Labourer, Martha is 53. James, Georgina and George have left home and married. Flora, 23, is a Shop Assistant in a Drapery. David is an Apprentice Joiner at a shipyard, and Margaret is at school.

In the 1911 Census for James David and Emily Younger, James David is a Shipwright aged 29, Emily is 28, Flora is 5 and (Emily) May is 3. Ethel Metcalf, Emily’s sister aged 21, is living with them.

In Q3 1911 George Kenneth Younger was born. He was baptised on 5 July 1911 at St. Catherine, Tranmere, parents George Christopher and Harriet.

On 6 September 1916, Robert and Martha’s daughter Flora Younger married Leonard Lee, 30, son of Thomas Lee, at Birkenhead St. Mary.

On 12 April 1919, Robert and Martha’s daughter Margaret Emma Younger married Alfred Mayor, 22, son of James Acken Mayor, at Birkenhead St. Mary.

On 29 July 1920 David Walter Younger (middle name transcribed as Waller), 25, married Matilda Davies, daughter of Allen Thomas Davies, at Birkenhead St. James.

Martha Younger’s death aged 71 was registered in Q3 1929. She was buried at Birkenhead (Flaybrick) Cemetery on 25 July 1929, Section 15, Grave No. 20.

On 3 November 1930, Florence Younger (who would have been 25), father James David Younger, married Ronald Arthur Jones, 27, father Owen Jones, at St Mark, Birkenhead.

Robert Younger’s death aged 81 in Birkenhead was registered in Q4 1937. He was buried with his wife Martha in Birkenhead (Flaybrick) Cemetery on 26 November 1937.

James David Younger’s death aged 78 in Birkenhead was registered in Q4 1960.
