Christopher George Waller (1867-1945)

Christopher George Waller was born on 20 February 1867. He was baptised at the Church of the Holy Trinity Birkenhead in March . Father’s occupation Seaman, address 124 Wood Street Birkenhead. The dates on the baptism record are just squiggles, but in the 1939 register he said his birth date was 20 February.

In 1891 he was a Dock Labourer aged 24, living with his parents at 11 Arrow Place Birkenhead.

On 27 February 1896 Mary Ellen Rowland was born, the birth being registered in Q2 1896. She was baptised on 15 April 1896 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity. Mother was Margaret Rowland of 26 Cathcart Street, no father listed. Margaret’s mother was named Mary Ellen Greatbanks.

On 12 July 1897 he married Margaret Elizabeth Rowland at “The Parish Church Birkenhead.” On the register it says Birkenhead St. Mary. He was 30, a Labourer living at 126 Price Street, father George James (deceased) a Naval Pensioner. She was 22, living at 22 Cathcart Street and her father was William Rowland, a Labourer. Witnesses were William Rowland her father, and Amelia Waller (1874-1953), later Dempster, daughter of his older sister Martha.

His wife’s brother Robert Rowland married Amelia Waller, who was born 25 August 1897 to James Colby and Mary Waller.

On 19 October 1898 George Greatbanks Waller was born to Christopher George and Margaret Elizabeth Waller of 8 Napier Street. He was baptised on 2 November at Birkenhead Holy Trinity. His death was registered in Q4 1900. He was buried on 28 December 1900 at Birkenhead St. Mary, aged 2 years.

In the 1901 Census taken in April they are living at 20 Cathcart Street. Christopher, 34 (actually he was 33), is a Dock Labourer; Margaret Elizabeth, 25, is recorded as Elizabeth M. Waller and her birth place as Cheshire Chester. Mary Waller is aged 5. Margaret’s father William Rowland and his family live next door at number 22. James Stubbs, 16, a Fishmonger’s Assistant, is boarding with them. I believe James was the son of Christopher’s older sister Georgina Stubbs, who died in 1895.

On 3 June 1901 Christopher Waller (1901-1985) was born, and he was baptised at Birkenhead St. Peter on 1 June 1901. Family abode was 134 St. Anne Street. in the 1939 register he gives his date of birth as 3 June 1901.

On 25 December 1902 Amelia Waller (1902-1904) was born. She was baptised on 25 January 1903 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity, the family address being 65 St. Anne’s Street. Her death was registered in Q2 1904. She was buried on 28 May 1904 aged 16 months at Birkenhead St. Mary. Family address 123 St. Anne Street.

On 23 November 1906 Edward Ansell Waller (1906-1986) was born, the birth date taken from the 1939 register. He was baptised on 6 January 1907 at Birkenhead St. Peter. Abode was 123 St. Anne Street. Father’s occupation Dock Labourer.

In the 1911 Census the family were living at 36 Meadow Street. Christopher George was a General Labourer aged 45 (actually 43). Margaret Elizabeth gave her age as 38. Her birth was registered in Q2 1875 and she was baptised on 17 May 1875, so she was probably actually 35 when the Census was taken in April 1911. Mary Ellen is 16 (actually 15), Christopher is 10 (actually 9) and Edward Ansell is 5 (actually 4). They have been married for 14 years and have had 7 children, 4 died and 3 survived. Counting Mary Ellen (which they seem to have done), I currently only have 5 in total before April 1911, with 2 of those dead. The most likely candidates are John Waller, born 1904 and died 1904, and twin Jane, born 1904 and died 1906, buried 15 August 1906 at Birkenhead St. Mary.

On 20 June 1911 Margaret Elizabeth Waller (1911-2001) was born. Birth date taken from the death register and the 1939 register.

In the 1939 register Christopher and Mary Theresa are at 65 Woodville Road Birkenhead. Christopher, born 3 June 1901 is a Carriage Cleaner for the G.W.R. Mary Theresa gives her date of birth as 21 September 1903. There are two “closed” records, i.e. Christine and another child may still have been thought to be alive when the records were transcribed, so there is likely to be another child to find. I think this is Margaret E. Waller born Q1 1934 in West Derby.

Again from the 1939 register, Christopher George Waller (mis-transcribed as Wallen) born 20 February 1867 is a Retired Dock Labourer. Millicent, birth date 12 August 1915, is a Confectioner Baker. She also has the name Miller next to her name, whom she married in 1941. Margaret E. has the names Dolphin and Brereton next to her name, also two dates, 24 July 1948 and 19 February 1947. Also her date of birth was originally written as 19 March 1875, but this has been altered to April after the fact. We only know her birth was registered in Q2 1875 and she was baptised on 17 May. They are living at 36 Meadow Street.

In the 1939 register Margaret and Henry Dawson are living at 13 Olive Mount Birkenhead. Henry, born 16 July 1901 is a Locomotive Fire Cleaner and Margaret’s birth date is given as 20 June 1911. There are two “closed records” which would be their children Edward and Walter.

In Q2 1941 Millicent married Gerard Sylvester Miller in Birkenhead.

In Q1 1945 Christopher George Waller died.

On 15 February 1947, Margaret Elizabeth Waller aged 72 married Robert Henry Brereton aged 78 at Birkenhead St. Matthew. Margaret E. Dolphin died Q2 1953 aged 77 or 78. Richard Dolphin died Q3 1960 aged 89.

In Q3 1954 Mildred Waller married George W. Robinson in Birkenhead.
