On 24 September 1883 Amelia Waller was born. She was baptised on 25 November 1883 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity, and it was recorded on the same page as her uncle’s (John James) daughters Martha and Jane, who had been baptised there on 28 October 1883. Father’s occupation Labourer. Parents’ names recorded as Edward Ancel and Jane Waller.

In the 1901 Census, Edward Ansell and Jane are living in Canning Town West Ham. Edward A. Waller is aged 45 and a Dock Labourer, Jane is 45, Amelia is 17, George J. is 14, Christopher J. is 10, Edward W. is 8 and Eliza is 6.

On 16 November 1903 at St. Luke’s, Victoria Docks, West Ham, Amelia aged 20 married Joshua Hunt, a Dock Labourer aged 23. His father was John Hunt and hers was Edward Ansell Waller. Joshua’s middle name was Sprocen or Sprosen, although he did not seem to use it.

Dora Amelia Hunt was born on 28 April 1905 in West Ham and baptised on 19 May 1905.

Ivy Josephine Hunt was born on 6 February 1907 in West Ham and baptised on 27 February 1907.

Minnie Jane Hunt was born on 28 July 1908 in West Ham and baptised on 21 August 1908.

Marion May Hunt was born Q4 1909 in West Ham and baptised on 1 October 1909.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Cundy Road, Custom House in West Ham. This was the address given by Amelia’s younger brother Edward William when he married Mabel Holloway in 1917. Joshua Hunt is 30 and a dock labourer, Amelia is 27, Dora 6, Ivy 4, Minnie 2 and Marion 1.

On 8 May 1911 Edward John Hunt was born in West Ham and baptised on 3 June 1911.

On 24 March 1913 Joshua William Hunt was born in West Ham and baptised on 11 April. In the 1939 register he gives his date of birth as 24 March 1913 also.

In Q4 1914 George Hunt was born in West Ham, and his death was recorded in the same quarter.

In Q4 1918 Daisy Irene Hunt was born (birth register incorrectly has her as Daisy E. Hunt) in West Ham and baptised (as Daisy Irene) on 10 November 1918.

In Q3 1920 the death of a Daisy E. Hunt was registered in West Ham. This may or may not be her, as she may have married a George Wheeler in 1937, although I have not found either of them in the 1939 register. The 1921 census will help!

In Q4 1925 the death of an Amelia Hunt age given as 43 (she was 42) was registered in West Ham.

In Q1 1927 the death of Edward J Hunt was recorded in West Ham, his age was 15.

In Q3 1930 the marriage of Dora Amelia Hunt and Horace Alfred China was registered in West Ham.

On 25 December 1930 in West Ham, Minnie Jane Hunt married Harry Roof, father George Harry Roof.

In Q4 1931 a Maureen J. Roof was born in West Ham, mother’s maiden name Hunt.

In Q4 1932 Marion M Hunt married James D Fenn in West Ham.

On 2 September 1933, Dora gave birth to Keith Peter China, birth registered Q3 1933 in Deptford.

On 5 August 1934 in Essex, Ivy Josephine Hunt married Sidney Ernest George Shelley, father Sidney Alfred Shelley.

In Q4 1934 Audrey Roof was born in West Ham, mother’s maiden name Hunt.

In Q1 1937 a Daisy Hunt married George H C Wheeler, registered in Essex South Western.

On 11 September 1937 Joshua William Hunt married Clare (possibly Clara) Kilonback, father Alfred Kilonback, in Plaistow.

In the 1939 registerJoshua William’s name is incorrectly transcribed asJoshua N Hunt, a Dock Labourer aged 26, born 24 March 1913 and wife Clara, rather than Clare, is 25 (incorrectly calculated as 26), born 30 November 1913. They are living with William and Grace Walker and their daughter Sylvia at 36 Skeffington Road East Ham.

Also in the 1939 register, Joshua Hunt, Stevedore, a widower, appears to be in the West Ham Union Workhouse, Leyton, a home for the chronically sick, aged and infirm. His date of birth is given as 5 March 1881, making him 58. His name was written as Joseph and then amended in pencil to Joshua.

In 1939 Dora Amelia and Horace Alfred China, born 7 March 1906 and a Gas Meter Maker, are living at 28 Arica Road Deptford with their son Keith Peter China born 2 September 1933.

In 1939 Ivy Josephine aged 32 and Sidney E. G. Shelley aged 30 are living at 80 Onslow Gardens Wallington SM6 9QQ. Sidney, an Insurance Inspector, was born on 12 March 1909.

In 1939 Minnie Jane and Harry Roof are living at 5 Ellesmere Road West Ham with Harry’s widowed father George H. Roof, Harry’s brother Daniel W. Roof and a James Day. Harry, 33 and born 23 March 1906, is a Bag Weigher at a Sugar Refinery. Minnie Jane is 33, born 28 July 1908. Audrey and Maureen J. are not present. I believe many children were evacuated beginning from 1 September 1939.

In 1939 Marion May and James Dennis Fenn are living at 19 Auberon Street Woolwich (actually this was in E.16 in Silvertown) according to the Electoral Register.

In Q1 1958 the death of Joshua Hunt was registered in Epping, age stated as 76, which would be correct.

In Q3 1959 Keith Peter China married Doreen M Oehmig in Bromley Kent.

In Q3 1960 Louise M. China was born in Bromley, mother’s maiden name Oehmig.

In Q2 1972 the death of Joshua William Hunt was registered in Newham.

In Q3 1972 Harry Roof died in Torbay aged 66, date of birth recorded as 23 March 1906.

In Q2 1974 the death of Minnie Jane Roof was recorded in Newham, date of birth recorded as 28 July 1908.

In 1985 Dora Amelia China died in Poole, Dorset, and Horace Alfred died there in 1991.
