In Q1 1856 the birth of Edward Ansell Waller (1856-1938) in Dunwich, district of Blything, Suffolk, was registered. The baptismal record dated 27 Jan 1856 confirms his parents’ names as George and Amelia Waller.

In the 1861 Census he is 5 and is listed as being born in Dunwich.

In 1871 he is 15 and his birthplace is listed incorrectly as Birkenhead.

On 24 December 1878 at “The Parish Church Birkenhead” he marries Jane Hawkins. Both are 23, he is living at 22 Grange Place and she at 27 Grange Place. The Marriage Certificate gives his name as Frederick Ansell Waller, but he signs it Edward Ansell Waller.

In the 1881 Census they are living at 24 Moon Street Birkenhead. Edward, 25, is a Corn Porter. Jane, 25, was born in Bebington.

In Q4 1881 Edward James Waller was born. He was baptised on 18 December 1881 at Birkenhead St. Peter, parents were Edward and Jane Waller. His death, aged 1, was registered in Q4 1882 in Birkenhead.

On 24 September 1883 Amelia Waller was born. She was baptised on 25 November 1883 at Birkenhead Holy Trinity, and it was recorded on the same page as Edward’s brother’s (John James’) daughters Martha and Jane, who had been baptised there on 28 October 1883. Father’s occupation Labourer. Parents’ names recorded as Edward Ancel and Jane Waller.

At some point between 1884 and 1886, Edward Ansell and Jane moved to West Ham.

On 20 August 1886 George James Waller was born in West Ham, Essex. He was baptised on 5 November 1886 at St. Luke’s, Victoria Docks.

On 8 September 1888 Fidelia Waller was born in West Ham. She was baptised on 9 November 1888 at St. Lukes, Victoria Docks.

In Q2 1890 Christopher John Waller was born in West Ham, Essex.

In the 1891 Census the family are living at 43 Martin Lane Canning Town Edward is a Dock Labourer aged 36, Jane is 36, Amelia, 7, is a scholar, George is 4, Fidelia is 2 and Christopher 11 months.

On 25 November 1892 Edward William Waller was born in West Ham, Essex. He was baptised on 16 December 1892 at St. Luke’s, Victoria Docks.

In Q1 1893, the death of Fidelia Waller aged 4 was registered in West Ham.

On 7 January 1895 Eliza Ann Waller was born in West Ham, Essex.

In the 1901 Census they are living in Canning Town West Ham. Edward A. Waller is aged 45 and a Dock Labourer, Jane is 45, Amelia is 17, George J. is 14, Christopher J. is 10, Edward W. is 8 and Eliza is 6.

Edward’s nephew Edward A. Waller, 9, and niece Annie Waller, 8, are staying with them. These are his brother James Colby’s children (the other one, Amelia, being with Mary Brereton senior).

In Q1 1905, the death of George James Waller was registered in West Ham.

In the 1911 Census they are still in Canning Town. Edward “Ancell” Waller is 55 and a Stevedore, Jane is 55 (birthplace “Beventon Chisher” rather than Bebington Cheshire), Christopher John, 20, is a Soldier in the Dragoon Guards, Edward William, 18, occupation India Rubber Works, and Eliza Annie is 16. Edward and Jane reported they had had 9 children, 4 were still living and 5 had died. Amelia was still alive, having married Joshua Hunt in 1903, in which case George James did indeed die in 1905. 2 children are still to be found.

Christopher John’s Medal Card shows he was a Private, and was on active service with the 1st Dragoon Guards, a Cavalry unit, from 11 November 1914. They were based in Lucknow India and on 11 November 1914 landed at Marseilles, from where they went to the Western Front. They went back to India in October 1917.

Edward’s wife Jane’s death was registered in Q1 1915.

On 21 January 1917 Edward William Waller, 25, of 42 Cundy Road, married Mabel Sarah Mary Holloway, 19, of 237 Prince Regent’s Lane, father Francis William Holloway, Labourer, in the Parish of St. Andrew, Plaistow. In the presence of Francis William and Priscilla Holloway.

Mabel gave birth to Edward William’s son, Edward William Lewis Waller, on 14 June 1917. He was baptised on 4 July 1917, mother’s name recorded as Mabel Sarah May rather than Mabel Sarah Mary.

On either 22 or 28 August 1920 (two records exist), Christopher John Waller married Elsie Maude Bacon, daughter of George Bacon.

There are three Wallers born with mother’s maiden name Bacon.

In Q1 1921 the birth of Sydney E.G. Waller in Tendring, Essex was registered, mother’s maiden name Bacon.

The marriage of Eliza A. Waller to George Dickerson was registered in Romford Essex in Q2 1924.

In Q4 1923 (born 24 November 1923) the birth of Reginald A. J. Waller in Maldon, Essex was registered, mother’s maiden name Bacon.

In Q2 1925 (born 6 May 1925) the birth of Peter L. Waller in Maldon, Essex was registered, mother’s maiden name Bacon.

In Q4 1929 George Albert and Eliza’s son George Edward Dickerson was born in Romford Essex.

The death of Edward A. Waller was registered in S.W. Essex in Q1 1938.

In the 1939 register taken on 29 September, Christopher John and family are living at 5, Hall Cottages, Maldon, Essex. His date of birth is given as 7 April 1891, but as his birth was registered in 1890 he was almost certainly born in 1890. His occupation is Cowman.

His wife Elsie M. Waller’s date of birth is given as 4 July 1900. Son Reginald A.J. Waller, born 24 November 1923 (15), is single and a Farm Carter. Son Peter L. Waller, born 6 May 1925 (14), is single and also a Farm Carter.

Sydney Edward George Waller was called up on 1 September 1939 and served with the 1st / 4th Essex Regiment.

Sydney married Margaret J. Hanshaw in Hendon Middlesex in 1947. They had three children, Christopher W. in 1949, Stephen P. in 1951 and Simon P. in 1955. The family later emigrated to Canada.

In the 1939 register Eliza Ann and George Albert Dickerson, a Retort House (?) Flue Cleaner, are living at 10 James Street, Barking with son George Edward. The official transcript has missed George senior and included the man next door, Frederick Batchelor, with Eliza and George Edward.

On 10 May 1941, a Saturday (at the very end of the Blitz), Edward William Waller of 83 Brock Road died at 237 Prince Regent’s Lane, his wife’s family home. He is recorded on the CWGC website as Civilian War Dead. His age is stated to be 44, but he was 48. The death register has his name incorrectly as William E Waller and again aged 44.

Also killed were his wife Mabel’s mother Mary Ann (known as Polly) Thurston, and her stepfather William Henry Thurston.

In Q2 1947 the marriage of Reginald A.J. Waller to Edith Belfield in Maldon was registered.

In Q3 1957 George Edward Dickerson married Shirley Davey in Ilford.

In Q2 1962 Shirley gave birth to Jane E. Dickerson, birth registered in Ilford.

The death of Eliza A. Dickerson was registered in Ilford Essex in Q4 1962. Her age was 67 and estimated birth year 1895.
