On 8 December 1859 Georgina Waller was born, the birth register giving her place of birth as Wirral. She was baptised on 8 January 1860 at the Church of the Holy Trinity Birkenhead, father’s occupation Seaman, address 248 Price Street.
On 12 May 1879, Georgina Waller married James Stubbs, at St. Nicholas Church, Liverpool. They were both living in Hunter Street. Georgina states her father’s profession to be Upholsterer. James’ father is William Henry Stubbs, Gardener. Witnesses were her sister Martha and Richard Young (not Robert Younger who Martha married in 1881).
In Q2 1880, the birth of William John Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered. He was baptised on 20 June 1880 at Christ Church, Claughton-cum-Grange. Parents James and Georgina Stubbs.
No record of them found in the 1881 Census.
In Q3 1882, the birth of Mary Ann Amelia Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered. She was baptised on 13 August 1882 at Birkenhead St. Mary. Parents James and Georgina Stubbs.
In Q2 1883 the death of Mary Ann A. (Amelia) Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered.
In Q2 1884 the birth of Georgina Ann Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered. She was baptised on 15 June 1884 at Christ Church, Claughton-cum-Grange. Parents James and Georgina Stubbs.
In Q4 1885 the birth of James Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered. He was baptised on 17 January 1886 at (Christ Church presumably) Claughton-cum-Grange. Parents James and Georgina Stubbs.

In the 1891 Census, the family are living in Bentinck Street. James is 33 and a butcher. Georgina is 30, William J. is 10, Georgina A. is 6, James is 5 and George 0.
In Q3 1893 the birth of Richard Stubbs in Birkenhead was registered. He was baptised on 16 July 1893 at Christ Church, Claughton-cum-Grange. Parents James and Georgina Stubbs.
In Q1 1895 the death of Georgina Stubbs aged 34 (she was 35) in Birkenhead was registered. She was buried, with a stillborn infant, on 22 February 1895, age stated to be 31, and buried at Birkenhead (Flaybrick Hill) Cemetery in Section 11, Grave No.150.
She had given birth to eight children. Three (Mary Ann Amelia, Rosa and Samuel) had died. The surviving children were William John, Georgina Ann, James, George and Richard.
In Q3 1900, William John Stubbs married Maggie McIwraith in Birkenhead.
In the 1901 Census William John Stubbs, 22, a Journeyman Butcher Slaughterman, was living in Tranmere with his wife Maggie Stubbs, aged 22 and born in Scotland..
Also in the 1901 Census, James Stubbs, 16 (he was 15), a Fishmonger’s Assistant, was boarding with his uncle Christopher George Waller, Georgina’s younger brother.
Also in the 1901 Census, a Georgina (Ann) Stubbs aged 17 (the correct age) was a Domestic Servant (General) at an address in the parish of Tranmere St. Catherines. The head of the household was John Buller, 33, a Schoolmaster, and his wife was Alice aged 31.
So where were Richard, 7, and George, 10, in 1901? And their father James for that matter? I found a Richard aged 8 and a George aged 10, living with a Martha Stubbs in Birkenhead. Martha is listed as wife but no husband is listed, and she has a son Charles Stubbs who is 0 years old. It is a possibility. Otherwise, perhaps they went to the workhouse? I did find a baptism for a Charles Stubbs on 20 February 1901 in Birkenhead St. Paul (the same parish where she was living in the Census), parents James and Martha Stubbs, but no birth register entry nor any marriage record.
On 31 October 1903, Georgina Ann Stubbs married George Steele at Birkenhead St. Mary. His age is recorded as 21 and his father was James Steele. Georgina Ann would have been 19, her father’s name was recorded as James Stubbs.
James Stubbs senior died in Q1 1926. He was a butcher aged 67, and was buried at Birkenhead (Flaybrick Hill) Cemetery on 16 January with his wife.
